How To Apply False Lashes

How to apply false lashes

For a long time, false lashes were something I never seemed to be able to get right. Looking back, it was probably a combination of using the cheap eyelash glues and not having YouTube tutorials to rely on but it meant that I gave them a wide berth for a long time. It's only since my makeup artistry course and a few extra tips that I picked up there that I grew in confidence at applying them so I thought why not share how I overcame the fear of those spidery things for any other lash avoiders out there!

First things first - to give yourself the best shot at it you will need a few basic items:

Lash glue.

And by this I mean Duo Glue. Please don't attempt to use those little vials of glue that come with the lashes - I've tried them all and hand on heart, Duo glue is the only one I would recommend. Many other makeup artists swear by it too. It also comes in a latex-free version for anyone who may be allergic to latex.

A small cosmetic or nail scissors will do but you do need something to be able to trim the lashes to fit your own eye.

Cotton buds.

I find these incredibly handy for applying the glue to the strip, and also to help sit the lashes in place.

Tweezers or Lash Applicator.

Lash applicator

A tweezers is best for individual or cluster lashes, but one of these curved applicators works the best for strip lashes in my opinion.

So lets get on with the simple steps...Before you start, apply a coat of your usual mascara to your natural lashes..

Step 1: Measure the lashes to fit your eye shape.

Most brands of lashes out there make the lashes longer than the average eye shape and if they are too long for your eye they won't stick or sit properly on your own lashes.

Step 2: Trim the lashes to fit onto your eye.

Make sure when you  trim the lashes that you cut them on the outside edge, not at the edge that sits in the inner corner of your eye as otherwise you will lose the natural gradient of the lashes which goes from short to long from the inner to outer edges.

Step 3: Apply glue to the band of the lashes.

You need to apply a thick enough layer that the strip is well coated but not dripping down onto the lashes themselves. I like to use a cotton bud for this as I think it helps to get an even layer without making too much of a mess but you can apply it however works best for you!

Step 4: Wait 30 seconds for the glue to go tacky.

If you are too impatient like I used to be, the glue will still be too wet and trying to apply the lashes will only result in smudging the glue all over your lash line and possibly your eyelid. ( I know I've done it!). Just don't blow on it if you're applying it to someone else's eye...just sayin'...

Step 5: Using the applicator, apply the lashes onto your lash line, sloping downwards.

Secure the middle of the lash first, then either end - either with the end of a tweezers, the end of your applicator or a cotton bud.

Et voila! Repeat the process with the second eye and give yourself a pat on the back for conquering your fear :) If I can manage it, anyone can! I find it trickier to apply them on myself than I do to clients or models but with plenty of practice it definitely gets easier.

The lashes I'm wearing here are Penneys too - the Natural ones - and with the Duo glue, they didn't budge throughout a recent night out so I can definitely recommend.
