Top 5 Eyebrow Products

Best eyebrow products
Eyebrows are a very subjective thing and everyone has a different idea of their perfect shape. And in fact, what is the perfect shape for one might look completely out of place on someone else if they have a different face shape, eye shape, eye colour etc. However there are a few eyebrow products which I believe can work for many to achieve the desired shape and frame the eyes. Because eyebrows really do frame the face.

The first product I'm talking you through is the most affordable out of the bunch. (Though, to be fair, none of them are ridiculously expensive).

Penneys (Primark) Brow Sketch Pencil.

Penneys Brow Sketch Pencil

What is it?

It is a double-ended pencil - one end being a spoolie brush and the other end being a slim, retractable pencil. It comes in three shades as far as I know - a light, medium and a dark shade and will set you back a tiny €2.50.

How to use:

First of all, brush through your brow hairs with the spoolie brush so that the hairs are all following the same direction and looking a little more "tidy". Then take the pencil in your chosen colour, and draw the line under your brows first from almost before the inner corner to the tail. Then do the same above the brow to create the desired shape - almost like drawing the outline. Then, using light upward strokes, fill in and/or define the brows, following the direction of your own brow hairs, mimicking the look of natural hairs if you can. When you are done with these steps, brush through the brows with the spoolie again to remove any excess product, especially from the front of the brow where the hair is naturally more sparse.

What's the verdict?

This is such a good product for the price in my opinion. The shade that I use is Dark, and I find that while most dark brown eye pencils end up having a warm reddish hue, this one is a much cooler tone and very natural looking. I would recommend however using a brow gel over it to set it to help it last longer - especially if you're the type of person who rubs their face a lot throughout the day without realising (like me! ;)). They are restocked often but they do sell out fast as soon as they land, so it is definitely worth buying more than one when you do get your hands on them. And if you do, don't forget to share which Penneys/Primark you found them in as they are often like gold dust!

NYX Professional Makeup Tinted Brow Mascara.*

NYX Brow Mascara

What is it?

A tinted mascara for the brows to tame and set them and set any other product tha*t has been applied to the brows. It comes in 5 shades - Blonde, Brunette, Chocolate, Espresso and Black and will set you back around €7.00 to €8.00 for a decent sized tube of 6.2g of product.

How to use?

This is honestly so simple to use. You can use it on its own for super speedy, defined and tidy brows that will stay in place all day or layer it over another product that you want to keep in place. It has the standard type of mascara wand, only smaller, which is sized perfectly for the brows. All you have to do is brush it through the brows lightly, in the direction of hair growth, et voila!

What's the verdict?

This is such a great product to have on hand or in your kit if you're a makeup artist. I have the shade Black, which is actually a brown-black really, not black-black and I plan to pick up the other colours for clients because it's that good. The only thing to note is this - if you are using it on someone else, please use a disposable spoolie - that's all I'll say :)

Inglot AMC Brow Liner Gel.

Inglot AMC Brow Liner Gel

What is it?

The AMC Brow Liner gel is (obviously) a gel product - similar to a pomade but more similar to their actual AMC Gel Liner - that gives great, long lasting definition to eyebrows, suitable for either a very natural looking brow if you use a very light hand, or else a more dramatic Insta-brow if that's your thing. It comes in 12 different colours, from a light blonde tone to a dark black, with a wide colour range in between and costs a very reasonable €13.00.

How to use?

This is best applied using a thin, angled brush - my favourites are the Blank Canvas Cosmetics E94 ( you won't find a sharper angled brush than this in my humble opinion!) and the Zoeva 317.
Use a spoolie to tidy up your brows first as with the other methods, then dip your brush into the product, remove the excess, and apply as you would the above pencil, but with lighter strokes. You can remove excess product with the spoolie afterwards if necessary.

What's the verdict?

If I was asked for recommendations of brow products that will literally not budge, this would be one of them. Just like the infamous AMC Gel Liner, this is waterproof so you will need an oil-based makeup remover to get this bad boy off, making it perfect for bridal or debs makeups or for a long day wear. A tiny bit of product will go a long way and this tub, although it looks tiny, will last you absolutely ages. You do need to warm up the product a little before use like most gels or pomades, but that's not an issue in my opinion.  If you find it starting to dry up a little, a drop of Inglot's Duraline will revive it and make it smooth and creamy to apply again. And, as you know I love a multi-purpose product, this can be used as an eye liner as well so it's a win-win. This is absolutely one of my most recommended and most used Inglot products.

NYX Professional Makeup Eyebrow Gel.*

NYX Eyebrow Gel

What is it?

I'm sorry, I know this is the second NYX product in this post but I couldn't not mention it! It is similar to the Inglot AMC Brow Liner Gel in that it is a gel formula (yes I am a genius) which is long lasting, smudge proof and waterproof. It comes in 5 shades as their brow mascara does, and is priced at €7.95 so also very affordable.

How to use it?

I won't repeat myself again so to know how to use, see the Inglot paragraph above. The only difference is that this product comes in a tube, not a little tub. It is a little harder to squeeze out in my opinion but also I think it's more hygienic as you're not dipping a brush into the product again and again.

What's the verdict?

Another budget-friendly gem from NYX - in fact, they can do very little wrong with their products if you ask me - being very high quality despite their prices. I know the shade range isn't amazing but if you do find a shade that suits, I hope you are as impressed with it as I am!

MAC Cosmetics Eye Brows Styler. *

Mac Spiked Eye Brows Styler

What is it?

Essentially, this is a higher-end version of the Primark Brow Sketch Pencil mentioned above. It is a micro fine retractable pencil, with a  water-resistant formula, with a spoolie on the other end. It comes in 8 different shades - my personal favourite being Spiked, a cool-toned dark brown, and retails at €18.50. The tip is thick enough that it won't snap off in seconds but thin enough to create those hair-like strokes.

How to use it?

Again, I won't harp on about this as I've already gone through the process with the Primark pencil. It is water-resistant but I still tend to set it with a brow mascara - either clear or tinted - for added insurance!

What's the verdict?

This is hands-down my most used brow product in my freelance kit. Spiked is a perfect cool brown as I mentioned, which in fact suits a variety of brow colours, and it is so quick and easy to apply. You can apply it lightly or build it up if necessary without it looking too heavy. Yes it's a little more pricey but for me in this case, you do get what you pay for.
